To kick off April Falls Month, we had the opportunity to engage with local community and chat about falls.

Rotary Club of North Hobart have partnered with Calvary Community Council to bring home the message that falls are not inevitable, they are preventable. As part of this, Prof Michele Callisaya (Menzies Institute for Medical Research, University of Tasmania) spoke about her falls prevention research and Falls Prevention Alliance Australia with Rotary Club of North Hobart.

Rotary Club of North Hobart have also designed the Steady on Your Feet 28 Day Challenge. These challenges cover 28 tips to help you reduce your risk of falls through awareness and home safety, strength and balance, health checks, and confidence and connection.

Prof Anne Tiedemann (University of Sydney, Sydney Local Health District) connected with members of the Marrickville, NSW community to discuss preventing falls and staying independent. Anne shared insights on common myths about falls, the latest evidence in falls prevention, and practical tips to help reduce fall risk and support independence.

Thank you to Mark Jones, IWC Community Wellbeing Coordinator, and Inner West Council for organising an important event. We’d also like to thank Cherie Thompson, a valued supporter of our work, for joining the panel and generously sharing her lived experience of falls.
