Falls Prevention Alliance Australia

We are stronger together

We are seeking organisations and individuals to join us in calling for policy change to reduce fall-related injuries in older Australians.

We need a national action plan, a mass media campaign and better funding of evidence-based services to better protect older people.

Together, we can promote healthy ageing to prevent falls.

We are an alliance of community organisations, professionals, and individuals dedicated to reducing falls among Australians aged 65+. By uniting stakeholders, we drive collective action, advocate for policy reforms, and promote evidence-based interventions.

Our mission is to foster collaboration, raise awareness, and advance strategies that reduce fall-related injuries in older Australians.

Until a friend fell and didn't go home, I hadn't heard of, or even thought about falls. I speak on behalf of the older generations of Aussies and to help get a message to Australia.  Falls are a major issue.  And remember this - falls don't discriminate.

Bob Barnes, Lismore community leader, Rotary Australia

Preventing falls and protecting lives

One in three older Australians experience a fall each year. Every day, 16 of our elders die and 400 are admitted to hospital after a fall (AIHW). As the leading cause of injury hospitalisation, falls strain individuals, families, and the healthcare system. We know how to prevent falls and help older Australians live safely and independently, but these evidence-based programs and services are rarely available.

Why we need an alliance

  • Fragmented efforts: No national policy or strategy and isolated prevention initiatives mean inefficiencies and gaps in care.
  • Rising concern: Fall-related injuries and hospitalisations are increasing, requiring urgent, coordinated action across healthcare, education, and government sectors.
  • Knowledge gaps: Limited access to fall prevention information leaves individuals, including healthcare professionals,  ill-equipped to reduce risks.
  • Economic impact: Substantial burden on healthcare  and families. A unified approach could drive  cost-effective strategies, reducing hospital admissions and  long-term costs.

For policymakers

Falls prevention is a critical public health issue, yet it remains  under-prioritised in national and state policies. A coordinated, evidence-based approach can reduce hospitalisations, improve quality of life, and ease the financial burden on healthcare systems.

Find out how policy action can drive change.
